Pittsburgh’s heralded Squonk Opera is a multimedia performance troupe inspired by a rust-belt love of spectacle and humor, integrating elements of post punk beats and gypsy rock, visually augmenting the sound with film projections and homemade props.  Their most recent over-the-top sensory spectacle, “Mayhem and Majesty,” explores the power of sound and music with camera jibs, projection puppets and kinetic machines.

“Ingenious, hallucinatory, hypnotic.” – The New York Times

Note:  this performance uses strobe effects and contains occasionally high-decibel sound.

This project is partially supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by The Heinz Endowments; the William Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency; and The Pew Charitable Trusts; and administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Gravity RadioComposer Mikel Rouse emerged from the downtown Manhattan scene of the 1980s, making multimedia "song cycles" that mixed the minimalist styles of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with songs inspired by the pop and roots music that he heard on the radio in his youth.  His newest exploration, Gravity Radio, tunes in to the zeitgeist, mixing kaleidoscopic multichannel video with sounds from the AP News Wire, a string quartet, short wave radio frequencies, and songs by Rouse’s band to create an otherworldly environment. Describing the culture we live in, Rouse communicates its complexity and, like the force of gravity that keeps us grounded, evokes its intangible mystery.

“A composer many believe to be the best of his generation.” – The New York Times
